WQXR’s weeknight host Terrance McKnight curates and hosts this evening of music for BAMcafé Live. Cuban-born singer Gerardo Contino leads this explosive new ensemble, which brings together Afro-Latin and African-American musical traditions with a distinctly New York flavor. The band’s multinational group of musicians includes five-time Grammy-winning bassist John Benitez and 13-time Grammy-winning percussionist Luisito Quintero. Contino’s project Los Habaneros was named New York’s “best Cuban dance band” by New York Latin Culture Magazine in 2017, and listeners can expect the same hip-swiveling salsa rhythms and passionate vocals.
