Angela Johnson

Curated by Darrell McNeill

Perhaps best known as a member of eclectic soul and acid jazz quartet Cooly’s Hot Box, Angela Johnson is that rare triple threat: a singer, songwriter, and producer in her own right. This industry veteran recently released her sixth solo effort, titled Naturally Me, in which she mines the spirit of classic 70s and 80s soul, from Aretha Franklin to Natalie Cole to Prince, to cover a range of topics, from Trayvon Martin and community mobilization to keeping the home fires burning. Backed by the supremely talented trio of Lisala Beatty, Tiffany T’zelle Wilson, and Darius Booker, Johnson brings her commanding, self-assured vocals and modern, genre-blending mastery to the BAMcafé Live stage.
