The original bassist for Sly & The Family Stone and the driving low end on classics like “Dance to the Music,” Larry Graham was essential to the late-1960s funk sound. Credited with inventing the “slap bass” technique, Graham performed with Jackie Wilson, John Lee Hooker, The Drifters, and others before forming Graham Central Station, a group heralded by another longtime Graham collaborator, Prince, and responsible for classics like “Release Yourself” and “Can You Handle It.”
