Sax titan Yuri Yunakov hails from the close-knit Gypsy communities of Bulgaria, but his ensemble’s riotous take on native Romani wedding music reflects the multicultural enclaves he found throughout New York City, his current home. Zikrayat’s music is a spirited reminder of the modernism of the golden age of Egyptian film music as well as the reach of the Arab world’s classical music and dance. Oud virtuoso Mavrothi Kontanis’ Maeandros Ensemble plays a unique repertoire that “meanders” through folk songs of the Greek countryside, urban songs from city centers, Ottoman court music, and regionally inspired originals, all effortlessly intertwined.
