The mammoth alternative rock band and friends draw the 2009 season to a close in strident style.
Dinosaur Jr. is an American alternative rock band from Amherst, Massachusetts. Formed in 1984, the band was originally called Dinosaur, but due to legal issues added the “Jr.” onto their name. After a lengthy hiatus during the late ‘90s and early 2000’s, the guitarist J Mascis reformed the band in 2005. Their distinct sound is characterized by high gain, extensive use of feedback and distortion. Mascis was also very influential in the alternative rock movement of the 1990’s with his melodic guitar solos and mastery of chord transition. This summer, Dinosaur Jr. will be releasing a highly anticipated album composed of all new material. What better way to close out our Central Park SummerStage season than with these mammoths of rock and roll.
New York City-based indie-rockers The Walkmen formed in 2000 and released their debut album Everyone Who Pretended To Like Me is Gone in 2002 to a critically warm reception. The Walkmen’s 2008 release You & Me earned the band further accolades with Paste magazine stating, “Melodic post-punk gives way to a wider sonic landscape, yielding to muted tones that dovetail comfortably with Hamilton Leithauser’s now-audible vocals,” and Filter magazine says, “You & Me has a panache that hearkens to an earlier era, acting like a rich veneer.”
California-based prog-rock/metal outfit Saviours released their sophomore album Into Abbadon in 2008. Influenced by the heavy sounds coming out of Great Brittain in the 70s — Iron Maiden and Black Sabbath — NME describes the band’s recent release as “prog-black metal songs, each six minutes apiece and boasting about 752 guitar solos. They hone terror to a fine science… the Messerschmitt drumming and car-chase guitars work towards an unholy union between Iron Maiden and Black Flag.”(Source)
