The Bang on a Can Marathon kicked off the Summer concert season on May 31 at the World Financial Center Winter Gardens. This year’s Marathon featured artists/composers Wu Man, Ars Nova Copenhagen, the Smith Quartet performing The Sinking of the Titanic by Gavin Bryars (my favorite piece of the Marathon), and Tortoise. This was a rare free concert appearance by Chicago’s Tortoise. Most importantly the Marathon is anchored by the Bang on a Can All-Stars led by guitarist Bill Frisell.
